Now, There Was a Song! Is a 1960 album from the immortal Johnny Cash. This was Johnny’s 9th LP. None of the songs on this collection were written by Cash and it shows in that, of all my Johnny Cash albums (I have less than a quarter of them – need more) this is the most mainstream country and is mostly a crying-in-my-beer fest. The stand out, for me, is Transfusion Blues (later Appears as Cocaine Blues on one of his live in a prison records). The remainder of this album eventually makes me rather melancholy so I don’t break it out very often unless a certain mood moves in. This session finds Mr. Cash in exceptionally fine voice and his band at the top of their game. I came awfully close to giving this CD 5 stars, and it deserves it in a lot of ways, but I figure I don’t play it as often as other albums by Johnny (purely for the above reasons). If you are a fan of traditional Nashville woe-is-me material this could be the JC record that you have been looking for, and is generally available at a great price. Ooops spoke too soon, it appears this CD has doubled in price since I bought it must be a diminishing supply.

The digital remaster is very good and shows off the original’s mix to pleasant effect. No nonsensical over compression applied. Major label recordings from this era tend to be excellently engineered, the big record companies back in the day simply did not employ many hacks when it came to recording engineers. Johnny’s voice is particularly well captured here. This digital version is not the place to look for holographic imaging though (It is originally mono which does NOT impact artistic merit).

The jewel case enclosed CD has a one-fold paper insert. Printing of the original jacket notes is included and that’s it. Unlike many of the Columbia/Legacy Johnny Cash CD re-issues there are no bonus tracks of unreleased material to be found.

I bought this album on vinyl when it was first issued ages ago. Because it was such a good record, I bought the CD so I can listen to it in my car on road trips. I love Johnny Cash and this collection is a great showcase for his talents.

There are song here that my husband had forgotten and loved in the past. Cash does a great job singing country wester tunes; however, he didn''t record that many. Would definitely recommed it to Johnny Cash fans.

Following the artistic success that was `Ride This Train'', Johnny Cash decided the change track and release an album of covers. He chose an excellent set of songs to cover, and really puts his stamp on them. A little less experimental than his previous couple of releases, this record seems to have been designed for mass appeal. With an upbeat backing Cash launches himself into a series of well known country tracks, giving us a set of rollicking songs delivered in his distinctive, captivating, off key bass voice. While the feeling of the album is upbeat, there is a dark overtone lurking in the background, which gives a slight nagging sense of danger. This is most apparent with tracks such as `Transfusion Blues'', by far and away the best track on the album. It''s a good crowd pleasing record, and one which will appeal to a wide range of listeners, not just the hardened Country fans. 5 stars.

I''ve just compared the same cd to Columbia''s issue (CK 66506), and believe me, it''s two different worlds. Hallmark''s copy seems like being tapped from the original recording using one mic., leaving so much of the details only to wish for. STAY AWAY FROM HALLMARK, go for Columbia''s issue of this one which sounds very well for it''s time.
