Product Description

A comprehensive manual for using crystals, gems, and stones to address physical, emotional, and spiritual health conditions

• Includes an extensive Materia Medica detailing the healing and spiritual properties of 200 crystals and stones based on Classical Chinese Medicine

• Explores the role played by the color of each stone, its Yin and Yang qualities, crystalline structure, chemical composition, and topical and internal applications

• Explains how to make stone and crystal elixirs, wear stones as healing jewelry, use them in massage and energy work, and cleanse and recharge them

• Based on the oral teachings of Dr. Jeffrey C. Yuen, a Taoist priest from the ancient lineage of the Jade Purity School (88th generation) masters

In addition to herbalism and acupuncture, Chinese Medicine has a rich tradition of using stones as medicine, passed from generation to generation for thousands of years. In this comprehensive guide and extensive Materia Medica, Leslie J. Franks presents the Stone Medicine teachings of Dr. Jeffrey C. Yuen, an 88th generation Taoist priest from the ancient lineage of the Jade Purity School, which dates to the Han dynasty, 206 BCE.

Detailing the therapeutic properties of 200 gems, stones, minerals, and crystals, Franks begins with an extensive look at 15 different forms of quartz, followed by chapters on transformative stones, protective stones, nourishing stones, source energy stones, and alchemical stones. She explains the physical, emotional, and spiritual conditions each stone can treat and how their color, form, hardness, and energetic qualities affect us according to Chinese Medicine. She discusses how to make stone and crystal elixirs for internal and topical use, how to charge quartz with the healing properties of other stones, how to cleanse and recharge a stone after use, and how to combine stones to create healing formulas for individual conditions. She explains different techniques of wearing stones as healing jewelry and how to use them in massage and energy work. She examines the chemistry and sacred geometry of crystal structure, revealing how the minerals contained in the stones affect our physiology by supporting our Jing (Essence); by nourishing Qi (energy), blood, and fluids; and by clearing Wind, Cold, Damp, and Heat conditions that can lead to disease.

Including a thorough primer on Traditional Chinese Medicine and backed by modern scientific research, this book explains how stones access our deepest layers, vibrating ever so slowly, to initiate deep lasting change.

“Beautifully written and well-organized with a deep understanding of Dr. Jeffrey Yuen’s teachings. Leslie Franks has produced an inspirational work about healing with gems and minerals that is not only for the practitioner of Chinese medicine but is also accessible to the layperson.” ― Sheila George, M.D., Former academic dean for the acupuncture program at the Swedish Institute and b

“Based on the teachings of Jeffrey Yuen, this labor of love, study, and experience is finally coming out. I am so looking forward to using classical Chinese stone medicine for healing and transformation in my own life and in those of my patients.” ― Christopher Dye, M.S., L.Ac., Dipl. Ac. (NCCAOM)

“My heart is singing knowing that Jeffrey Yuen’s work is being offered to the world through Leslie’s book, Stone Medicine. I am equally delighted that she has included her own research and experience. I am one of many people who have sat in Jeffrey’s classes feeling fortunate beyond belief to be in his presence, letting it in to transform me. I’m grateful that Leslie has documented the details of his remarkable teachings and is sharing them with the world!” ― Barbra Esher, L.Ac., Dipl. ABT & Ac. (NCCAOM)

Chapter 14

Transformative Stones

If quartz crystals represent perfection in the world of minerals, the transformative stones demonstrate the process by which perfection is accomplished. In Western terminology, this large group of stones is called chalcedony. It includes agate, chalcedony, jasper, and onyx. The stones are fundamentally the same--that is, a fibrous subcategory of quartz, all with similar hardness and all with a chemical composition of silicon dioxide. For the ancient Chinese, however, who saw consciousness and spirit in the natural world, the patterns, colors, and configurations these stones presented were indications of a process of refinement and evolution.

Most of the transformative stones form at the Source/Yuan, or igneous level, but their appearance shows a process of metamorphosis. The stones are quartz, but they do not form perfect crystals. They demonstrate a slow evolutionary process as the Earth adapts to change. They also represent a core tension of human life--the relationship between Water, our Essence, and its requirement to discover and express our deepest self, and Earth, with its requirements of living in society. Looking at the agates, with their banded, speckled, or patchy appearances, we can imagine the struggles and conflicts the stones experience during their creation--as they melt and solidify, compress and release, fuse and separate. Eventually the stones refine to become the strong, definitive colors of the jaspers; the translucent, homogenous colors of the chalcedonies; or the shining, intensely black onyx, which represents our deepest Essence: the Water energy of the Kidneys. The group as a whole matures to its ultimate perfection in the subtlety and elegance of jade, a stone held in the highest regard since the earliest history of the Chinese.

The use of jade in Chinese culture dates to the Neolithic period, when ancient populations considered the nephrite jade they were able to mine locally to be inherently more valuable than gold or silver. They used the stone to shape ritual objects and tools, and the quality of the carving gives evidence to a highly sophisticated civilization. Nephrite jade is extremely durable, as demonstrated by the many jade artifacts unearthed that date back to more than 1,000 years before the Common Era.

In the nineteenth century, a beautiful jade from Burma became popular among the royalty and Confucian scholars. It had clearer and bolder colors than the indigenous nephrite jade, and the bright emerald-green color, called imperial green, was much sought after. This is jadeite. It has a different chemical composition than nephrite jade, but this difference was unknown until later in the century.

Jade is associated with the upper dan tian. We use agates, jasper, and chalcedony for treating illness, but jade is an aspirational stone. It represents the possibility to ascend out of petty, selfish concerns and to exhibit qualities of behavior that benefit all humans.

On the plus side, this book provides the best window I''ve seen into how the mineral element can be incorporated into chinese medicine. On the other side of the ledger, there are a few key deficits: information on what constitutes a healing grade of stone is missing. Just as in herbology or dietary therapy, the quality of the material determines the quality of the results--and lower grade stones can have a negative impact on health. From my experience, the guidance on cleansing the stones is also substandard. If stones are only cleared on a weekly basis, a common guidance, they are quite likely to persistently hold onto lower energies cast off by the patient and/or practitioner. Third, there is a level of awareness and sophistication required when using any stone in a terminated crystal form. This is not something advised for the beginner. This point should be carefully pointed out: strong reduction or addition and significant imbalances to the patient can result. Working with terminated crystals requires inner sight and sensitivity, qualities which must be carefully cultivated first in order not to deplete or damage the patient. These are powerful tools, and IMHO, I would recommend working with this book first in an apprenticeship situation where the practitioner adding this to their repertoire is given close supervision and careful guidance.

Leslie Franks has done a masterful job of organizing and presenting Master Jeffrey Yuen''s view point of Chinese energetics - this is the book I have been wanting for at least ten years! Franks sums up nicely much precious information which I have spent 15 years in gathering - from recordings, transcripts of talks, and personally attending Master Yuen''s seminars. The first 75 pages provide short descriptions of Yuen''s teachings about Chinese medicine in general, which provides a good foundation for understanding the text of the Stone teachings.
In the rest of this generous-sized book, the Stones are arranged according to which level of Qi with which they most resonate, which is a potent way to apply them. She also lists their chemical compositions, crystalline structure, level of formations, chinese name, appearance, key characteristics, directionality, functions and uses, and combinations of stones to use.
While this book is aimed at practitioners of Chinese medicine, it should be useful to many health care providers because of her clear explanations. She is a natural teacher; thank you, Leslie Franks!

This book is a must have for the Crystal Healer. It incorporates the stones into Chines Medicine seamlessly and for the advanced practitioner it is indispensable. But! For someone who does not have much learning in Chinese Medicine, , Leslie Franks gives clear and concise information. Her writing style is not at all dry like the typical textbook, which makes learning even easier. The information on each stone is extensive, and she gives clear explanation for each stones use.

I must disagree with a reviewer who found ‘several key issues’. First, quality of the stone is not of utmost importance. Some very not pretty crystals and gems have strong healing properties. Crystal healing is NOT just for those who can easily drop thousands of dollars on perfect stones. Secondly, you don’t have to be a special and enlightened and sophisticated human being to use a terminated crystal. A little study (there is so much info online and some fabulous books) will give you all the information you need. As for someone creating imbalances in a ‘patient’, I would hope that by the time you are working on clients, you are no longer a beginner and have much study and learning behind you. Please let me say again that lower quality stones do not harm you! They are all part of the stone kingdom earth has kindly provided us. If only exquisite crystals and gems could be used in healing, there would be very few crystal healers. We all buy the stones that we are drawn to, and also what is available in our price range.
I have been a crystal healer for almost 30 years, so I know what I am talking about. If you are an absolute beginner, this book is for you too! Don’t let silly reviews scare you away. I would also grab a great book on Crystal Healing and quartz crystals to get to know the different types and their properties. But this book will bring you far down your healing path.

If you have at least a general background in Chinese medicine (you have to have some way of diagnosing the problem according to TCM criteria, or else none of it will make sense), and love crystal healing, this book is absolutely indispensable. I''ve never seen anything like it. Leslie Franks has my deepest respect for putting this together. I absolutely love it.

I LOVE this book and would give it 5 stars except...the Kindle version is a bit frustrating. First though, it must be said that this book is a treasure trove of information. Providing an overview of Chinese Medicine history and theory; Franks then connects the various aspects of the mineral kingdom (crystal system, mineral class, color, chemical composition, etc) to Chinese Medicine so that we might work with minerals in subtle healing in a more nuanced, grounded way. There are no promises of ascension or enlightenment - this is a practical guide to subtle healing with stones according to Chinese Medicine. This text has become a companion to Michael Gienger''s Crystal Power Crystal Healing. When researching crystals and stones for my own personal work, I refer to both books. I have both books in e-format and in paperback/hardcover.

I do wish that the Kindle version provided internal links within the text. For example, when referencing the Index, if I want to then go to the page for the stone or symptom I''m researching, I can''t just click the name of the crystal or symptom or page (and page numbers are not given in the e-book version). This is a reference text that is uploaded digitally like a novel. Still - try to get me to remove it from my devices. :)

After practicing acupuncture for 30 years, I began playing with applying Herkimer Diamonds to acupuncture points. The results blew me away. I have collected rocks, stones, crystals and gemstones my entire life. Then I googled and learned that there actually was stone medicine being taught from one of the most esteemed teachers in the field, Jeffrey Yuen, and some of his students. A few months later I discovered this book! I can''t say enough about both the content and the ease of use of this book. It is brilliant. If you have found yourself at this page, your entire journey will be inspired and enhanced by this offering. To have had this book 30 years ago would have been miraculous. To have it now is truly a blessing for which I am very grateful and feel everyone interested in stones for healing and transformation would benefit greatly from having it in their personal library. Thank you Leslie Franks for making this your love offering to all of us who love the stones.

I have a special interest in crystals and their use in healing and spirituality and somewhat well versed. I was very pleasantly surprised at how much deeper my understanding of crystals and their properties with this book. The perspective includes TCM (Traditional chinese medicine) concepts which gives me another perspective in its use. Jeffrey Yuen is a renown Chinese medicine practitioner and teacher whose knowledge is imparted in this text, which adds authoritative reference, but the author has done a great job in making the different crystals accessible and understandable. I would say, its not for the beginner in either TCM or crystal knowledge seeker but if integrated into ones repertoire, your understanding of both can deepen tremendously.
